North Pacific Cannery

There is a bus that will take you there from the tour boat. Plan on spending a few hours there. Mess house is a great place for breakfast and lunch. They have a little gift shop. At one time there was over 200 cannery along the west coast. Canneries were an important part of the economy providing jobs and goods. North pacific canning company was built in 1988 by Rutherford Johnston,John Alexander Carthew and Alexander Gilmore McCandless. they bought the 183 acres with a Crown grant for $32. The Cannery ran for almost 90 years and closed in the 70's. It still continues to operate as a maintenance and reduction facility for the fishing fleet in Prince Rupert tell 1981. Some local historians saved the site from demolition and started the museum.
